Seine besondere Attraktion hat die oberpfälzische Kleinstadt Hirschau rund 60 Kilometer nördlich von Regensburg dem Kaolinabbau zu verdanken. Beim Abbau der weißlichen Porzellanerde fiel der feine weiße Quarzsand als Abfallprodukt an – und wurde neben den Sandgruben als Berg aufgeschüttet.

Im Laufe von mehr als 100 Jahren Kaolinabbau in Deutschlands größtem Abbaugebiet für den feinen Porzellan-Grundstoff wuchs der weiße Hügel von Jahr zu Jahr immer weiter. „Der Gedanke, hier auf Skiern herunterzufahren, kam den Hirschauern bereits vor mehr als fünfzig Jahren“, sagt ein Sprecher des Freizeitparks Monte Kaolino, eine hundertprozentige Tochtergesellschaft der Stadt Hirschau.

Der Monte Kaolino in Hirschau zählt heute zu den größten künstlichen Sandaufschüttungen weltweit – und ist mit seiner insgesamt 30 Slalomtoren zählenden Abfahrt sowie eigenem Skilift die größte Besucherattraktion der oberpfälzischen Kleinstadt. Zusätzlich bietet das „Sand-Skigebiet“ eine eigene Kletterstrecke für Fußgänger und eine Aussichtsplattform am Gipfel für alle. Ganz besonders waghalsige Sportfans können sich auch in einen Mini-Bob setzen, der die Mutigen beim „Sand-Zipfelbob-Downhill“ auf der Piste nach unten katapultiert.

Zu deutschlandweitem Ruhm hat es der SC Monte Kaolino Hirschau, der eigens gegründete Skiclub am Sandberg gebracht, der heute an Hobby-Sandskifahrer die nötige Ausstattung für den sommerlichen Pistenspaß verleiht. Das nächste Großereignis steht für die Organisatoren des Skiclubs bereits vor der Tür: Am 19. Juli findet am Monte Kaolino die Europameisterschaft im Sand-Skifahren statt.

Zu den absoluten Höhepunkten am Monte Kaolino zählt regelmäßig die Weltmeisterschaft im Sandboarden mit Teilnehmern aus allen Erdteilen und bis zu 5.000 Besuchern. Der ostbayerische Sandberg ist weltweit der einzige, auf dem auch die Boarder fahren können. Zur Anlage gehört auch ein riesiger Campingplatz mit mehr als 300 Plätzen sowie ein Dünenfreibad und ein Erlebnis-Hochseilgarten. Vor zwei Jahren eröffneten die umtriebigen Betreiber zusätzlich eine (Sommer-)Rodelbahn in ihrem Skigebiet.

Im Gegensatz zu den stetig steigenden Besucherzahlen dürfte der Monte Kaolino selbst in den nächsten Jahren nicht mehr weiter wachsen: Überschüssiger Quarzsand wird inzwischen nicht mehr auf Halde gekippt, sondern wieder verfüllt und für Renaturierungsmaßnahmen verwendet.

Was den Sandberg für viele besonders attraktiv macht: Mit 2,50 Euro für die Einzelfahrt 28 Euro für einen Tagesliftpass kommt der exklusive Skispaß am Monte Kaolino deutlich günstiger als eine Abfahrt in den Alpen. Geöffnet ist der Lift jedes Jahr von Mai bis September – an Wochentagen von 14 bis 18 Uhr und an Wochenenden und in den Schulferien von 10 bis 19 Uhr.
